How we compare
What the big photo book sites do that we deliberately do not
We are not going to pretend the incumbents are bad at printing — several of them are very good. The differences worth knowing about are in pricing honesty, what happens to your files, and what the software refuses to let you do to yourself.
| The practice | photobook.studio | Typical elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Sale pricing | One price, always | A near-permanent 40–60% off an invented list price, refreshed with a new countdown each week |
| Seeing the price | Full price list on a public page; calculator on every page | Often only visible once the book is built and in a cart |
| Low-resolution photos | Warned on the thumbnail; genuinely unprintable ones block checkout | A small yellow triangle at most; the blurry book still ships and the refund is argued afterwards |
| Getting your layout out | Print-ready PDF, free, forever, ordered or not | No export. The layout exists only inside their account, and disappears with it |
| Group contributions | Share link — anyone can add photos, nobody can alter the book | Email the photos to one person and let them do it all, or share a full account login |
| One order, several addresses | Split shipping with a separate gift message per destination | Separate orders, separate shipping charges, separate tracking |
| Judging the paper | Free material kit, plus a free press proof of one real spread from your own book | A screen mock-up, or a paid sample book of somebody else’s photos |
| Delivery dates | A promised date on the order; miss it and the reprint is offered, not requested | An estimated range, and a support queue if it slips |
| Bringing your own layout | Upload a press-ready PDF into any edition; free preflight | Consumer sites: not supported. Trade printers: supported but with no consumer editions |
| Print process | Press, true photographic and 12-ink giclée — each edition labelled with its process and resolution | Press only, and generally unstated. “Premium paper” is usually the same press on heavier stock |
| Software | Browser, nothing to install, works signed out | A desktop download or an account wall before the first upload |
| What is done with your photos | Printed, then deleted 90 days after delivery. Never used for anything else | Retained indefinitely; several grant themselves broad licences in the terms |
“Typical elsewhere” describes patterns common across the large consumer photo book services as of 2026, not any one company. Practices change; if something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it. Contact us
Fair is fair
Where the big services genuinely beat us
You should know this before you order, not after.
- Template libraries. If you want three hundred pre-designed themes with seasonal clip art, they have them and we do not. Our layouts are deliberately plain, and there are nine of them.
- Absolute floor price. During a genuine deep promotion, a mass-market softcover can land below ours. If price is the only consideration, take the promotion.
- Everything-in-one-basket. Mugs, calendars, canvases, phone cases. We only make books.
- Retail pickup. Some are collectable from a shop the same day. Ours are posted from the bindery.

Our undiscounted prices, at the smallest size
Compare these against a competitor’s price after their discount, not before it — that is the number you would actually pay.

Try it before you decide
The builder works signed out, the sample kit is free, and the press proof of your own spread is free. There is no point at which we need your money to prove the claim.
